The Words on Women’s
Sports Awards.

The Words on Women’s Sports Awards is the first innovation from the newly-created Words on Women’s Sports Collective.

Initiated by award-winning author and journalist of the Guardian Suzanne Wrack and sports historian, writer and author Dr Carrie Dunn, the Words on Women’s Sports Awards has been established to spotlight the work of journalists covering all women’s sports. The awards are free to enter and you are welcome to enter multiple submissions into different categories.

Journalism has a critical role to play in the development of and growth of interest in women’s sports. Journalists covering women’s sports generally labour with little recognition or expectation of any recognition. Often working in inferior environments to those journalists covering men’s sports operate in, many have to advocate for adequate promotion, space, investment and commitment from their respective media organisations, all while providing high-quality, attentive and in-depth coverage. That is why the awards will not be a standalone event, or a stuffy sit-down meal, but will take place following workshops or other activities organised by the Words on Women’s Sports Collective, with the inaugural awards taking place on Wednesday 9 September at the end of the founding event of the Collective.
The awards are free to enter.
